My oldest son, my Finleypotamus, was born by c-section after a high risk pregnancy. He was born relatively healthy, but his first year of life did end up including several unexpected surgeries. I was a new mom and scared and had no clue what to expect at doctor's visits. And, now that my boys are a little bit older and have started to get the common childhood illnesses and infections, such as the common cold, earaches, gastroenteritis, fever and sore throat I, along with other moms and dads, struggle to explain what to expect.
Recently, I was given the opportunity to receive and review the entire Dr. Hippo Series of books by Dr. Charlotte Cowan, M.D. I was excited to check these books out, not only because they featured a hippo, but because they looked very educational and fun.
Here is my video review of the Dr. Hippo Series, which includes The Moose with Loose Poops, Sadie's Sore Throat, Katie Caught a Cold, Peeper Has a Fever and The Little Elephant with the Big Earache.
Dr. Cowan's bio from her website:"Dr. Cowan is a board certified pediatrician who trained and practiced for many years at Boston’s MassGeneral Hospital for Children where she remains on staff. During her clinical years at the MGH, she served on the Faculty of the Harvard Medical School. Additionally, Dr. Cowan has completed a Fellowship in Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago and is a current Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics.
While in college at Princeton University, Dr. Cowan majored in English and developed a love of creative writing. Before going into medicine, she taught English and worked as a social worker with emotionally disturbed children in New York City.
Dr. Cowan is thrilled to combine her English and medical training by writing stories for children about the illnesses and issues that are important to them. Her first five books, collectively called the Dr. Hippo Series, are about acute infectious illnesses and are written to entertain, educate and comfort both parent and child.
The Little Elephant with the Big Earache was the first title. Published originally in 2004, The Little Elephant has been used nationwide by Departments of Public Health in educational outreach programs. Extremely well received within the medical community, The Little Elephant was released to the trade for the first time in October 2007.
In January 2008, the next three titles in the Dr. Hippo Series were released: Katie Caught a Cold, Peeper Has a Fever, and Sadie’s Sore Throat. The Moose with Loose Poops is being released in January 2009.
Dr. Cowan is married and has three children, ALL of whom have suffered the ailments about which she writes. They live in Eastern Massachusetts."
Buy: All of the books in the Dr. Hippo Series are available to purchase at your favorite local bookstore or online at Amazon. Click here for info. In my opinion, these would be an excellent shower gift or gift for any parent.
Win: Dr. Cowan is generously offering one Potamus Prefers reader the entire Dr. Hippo Series. Each book has a separate parent's guide which answers frequently asked questions. I love the names of the books and the unusual subjects!
"Over-the-counter cold and cough medications are not considered either safe or effective in treating children under age 6" This blows me away ... they really should tell you this stuff when you have a child! (Cindy --- tdrpromotions@gmail.com)
I learned there are 5 books in the series and each one includes a parents guide to the illness in the book. What a great day!

In your video and I learned that the books really tell kids what can happen when they are sick. It's realistic, but tells them in a fun way that they can understand!
I learned that because not all parents in America read English well, Dr. Cowan has matched the illustrations of her stories to the questions and answers in her Parent Guide. These books are really great! Thank you!

I love this serious of books because as a mother of 6 children sick children are not fun. The main characters in each of the great books have an illness that often affect small children. Being able to read about someone having the same problem as you possibly could make it easier to deal with for the child

because not all parents in America read English well, Dr. Cowan has matched the illustrations of her stories to the questions and answers in her "Parent Guides," which are included with her books. This visual relationship should help to cue parents and enable them to focus on areas of concern for them and their child.
