Progresso Panko and Broth Review, Giveaway

Have y'all tried panko bread crumbs? Until now, I hadn't either. Wondering what panko is?

According to the info I received from MyBlogSpark...
"Progresso’s panko is a flaky bread crumb which adds a light crispiness to your food and is available in two flavors, plain and Italian. Progresso broths are 100% natural and use high quality ingredients to achieve a great homemade taste. They are fat free, gluten free, contain no preservatives, no added MSG and no artificial flavors. Progresso broth is available in chicken and reduced sodium chicken and beef flavors."

Recently, I received a sample of Progresso Panko Crispy Bread Crumbs (Plain) and Progresso Reduced Sodium Chicken Broth to try out. Since neither hubby or I had ever cooked with panko, we read the directions carefully then decided to give it a try for dinner last week. Here is our video review...

The Progresso Panko really made a nice, crispy and even crust on our chicken breasts. We loved them. We took their advice and flavored them to our liking by adding a little Parmesan and other spices. The chicken broth gave the plain white rice a good flavor. I also like that it has reduced sodium. I will definitely be using both of these products again in the future.

Would you like to try Progresso Panko, but need inspiration in the form of panko recipes? Progresso has teamed up with Chef Michael Chiarello, who appears daily on the Food Network, and can also be seen on Top Chef Masters. In addition, he runs and owns Bottega Restaurant in Napa Valley, CA. Below are just a few of Chef Chiarello’s tips to help you create quick, flavorful meals you and your family will enjoy. He has a recipe for Oven Fried Chicken Tenders that is pretty close to the recipe we used for our full sized chicken breast, but it has less fat in the oven. I tried this later in the week and it came out very good. My sons LOVE chicken tenders! I am so happy to have a way to make crunchy tenders healthier.

Sample Panko Tips:
Breading 1-2-3: Panko adds the perfect light crunch to fish fillets, chicken breasts and pork chops. Dip in flour, then beaten egg and coat both sides in Panko before frying or baking
Faux Fried: Instead of frying, bake Panko-coated chicken in a 400F oven for 20 minutes to get the same crispy crunch without the fat

Sample Broth Tips:
Give New Life to Leftovers: Time in the fridge can steal moisture and flavor; drizzle a little broth over last night’s pasta or casserole before reheating
Better than H20: Water adds moisture, not flavor; replace water with broth when you cook potatoes, rice and grains

Check out ProgressoFoods.com and ProgressBroth.com for additional tips, recipes and videos from Chef Chiarello. You will find coupons at both sites to help you save money!

I make entertaining easier by trying to get as much of the cooking done ahead of time as possible. For example, mashed potatoes can be done a day ahead and refrigerated and then reheated in the microwave :)

I have found if you spray the panko with cooking oil that it comes out crispier. You can bake instead of deep fry. You have to spray both side of your panko coated food or place a thin coating of olive oil in the pan you are using to bake your food in.

To make home entertaining easier I sit down and lay out a menu and come up with a grocery list. I have tried and true recipes and then I add one or two new items. Some of my recipes can be made 2-3 days in advance. I always ask my husband or kids make one of their "specialties".

Aileen said...

One step in your video was to dip the chicken in beaten egg. I found that you can use water with panko if you want and the crumbs stick pretty well. Also, if you are putting your chicken flat in a baking dish you can press more crumbs on and they stick to the chicken after it is cooked. Your chicken looked so good.

My husband makes something called spiedini with bread crumbs. It's like a beef and cheese roll. You start with a very thin breakfast steak or slice of roast beef, add a slice of think Italian salami, a little grated provel cheese (a St. Louis kind of cheese), bread crumbs, roll it up, and put it in the broiler for a few minutes. It makes a really dense "sausage" that is excellent.
